Children lack the developmental capacity to fully understand how their choices are being shaped. The result is endless scrolling, exposure to harmful content, and an unhealthy relationship with digital devices.
Laws such as California's Protecting Our Kids from Social Media Addiction Act attempt to push back, but age verification and consent systems create their own privacy risks.
The question is clear: should children be treated as digital consumers or digital citizens?
The Bias Problem: When Algorithms Reinforce Inequality
AI systems often fail children because their realities are absent from the datasets and design processes:

- Policymakers must treat AI systems that impact children as high-risk and enforce stronger protections.
- Parents and carers require clear tools and information to help children navigate AI systems safely.
- Children themselves must have a voice. Their lived experience is critical for building systems that truly serve them.
The Path Ahead
The stakes are enormous. Today's AI decisions will shape how a generation learns, plays, and understands autonomy and agency.
We have a choice:
- A future where children are tracked, nudged, and shaped by algorithms built for profit.
- Or a future where AI supports creativity, wellbeing, and equitable opportunity.
The children in our schools and homes today will be tomorrow's leaders and innovators. The values we embed in AI now will echo across their lifetimes.
The question is simple: Will we let them grow up algorithmic, or will we let them grow up free?
